Abstract

We examine household-level economic outcomes associated with microfinance loans. Loans funding microenterprises are no better than those funding traditional livelihoods, and those for starting new microenterprises fare particularly poorly. Livelihood loans are more effective when multiple borrowers seek such loans together, and when borrowers receive the full funding applied for. © AOM 2019.All right reserved.
