Behavioral theories of organization are a major portion of the field of organizational studies, as behavioral reasoning is found across a range of theoretical approaches. We review the role of behavioral theory in the major research traditions of organization theory, starting with the original behavioral theory of the firm and continuing to evolutionary theory, population ecology, institutional theory, and transaction cost theory. We also address the organizational problems investigated by each theory, and we summarize by noting a trend toward greater integration of the field around behavioral reasoning. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
